Car hire excess and break down insurance cover a must for holidaymakers
As the summer holiday season approaches, many people will be heading off for well-earned breaks either at home or abroad. With more holidaymakers putting their own packages together, a few insurance products may appeal to people, allowing them to save time and money.
Those who have travelled with Aer Lingus, Ryanair or Aer Arann may be familiar with the car hire deals they offer at knock down prices, but often the price that is quoted will not include car hire excess cover, leaving you facing a huge bill if you purchase it at a car hire counter.
If you are hiring a car for holiday or for work, take out a car hire excess cover policy before you leave home. Most rental arrangements will cover theft from the vehicle and collision damage waiver (CDW). However, if you dent the rental car or it is stolen, the driver will be asked to pay the first portion of the repair or replacement costs, known as the excess.
The excess is a voluntary insurance and means if the car is damaged or stolen, the car rental company can charge your credit card for the excess amount, which you can then claim back as a reimbursement on your policy.
If you are travelling overseas with your own vehicle, breakdown cover will be an important thing to have if you experience a flat battery, punctured tyre or engine trouble. There is now an 80 per cent success rate for roadside assistance, with cover provided 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
An annual policy will cover for a European trip of up to 31 days throughout 29 countries including the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Holland. With breakdown cover, if your car is put out of action for any reason, your insurer will arrange for a roadside repair team to spend up to an hour trying to fix the problem.
If it cannot be repaired on the roadside, they will arrange for the car to be taken to a garage for mending, and help to locate and deliver replacement parts, although the cost of the parts will not be covered. The insurer will arrange alternative travel, emergency car hire or cover public transport costs to allow you to continue enjoying your holiday or for returning home. Emergency accommodation and car recovery to Ireland will also be covered.
